I almost did! Unknowingly. Who knew xylitol was so toxic to dogs? Luckily my dogs are very healthy and survived. Xylitol is one of the top poison control calls for dogs. So many people are finding out the hard way about xylitol, like myself. Luckily my dogs have a very strong and healthy immune system and were able to survive.
Studying food, the environment, and what science does to our food supply, on top of many forms of toxic chemicals ingested from all sorts of means; my awareness is ultra heightened.
Knowing how grossly over processed and treated human food is, I knew the quality of dog food would be even worse. After years of studying and being vegan, I’ve evolved. One thing I know, dogs are NOT meant to be vegan. (nor are cats). Some animals are and some aren’t. Their teeth and digestive systems help identify nutritional and diet needs.
Although dogs have been overly bred and genetically changed through the years, they all originated from a wild animal (the wolf). That shows the natural innate sense that they began long ago eating meat.
With that said, let’s explore the foods most people feed their dogs. Most people have no idea what their dog’s food is made up of on the commercial market. (even including “organic” labeled foods). This is the most convenient way to feed dogs. Some seek out more specific diets, like raw meat, specialty foods, and even make their own, but very few. We rarely cook for ourselves and families these days out of convenience and busy schedules, it can even more with pets.
But, once you discover what is in dog foods, you may want to reconsider your choices. You may also understand more why so many of our dogs (and other pets) are so obese, get cancer, and more sickly.
Of course there are many factors that contribute to unhealthy dogs, similar to unhealthy humans. One area to explore is how years ago, one rabies vaccine was for a lifetime. In this day and age of such greater advanced technology and science, how is it that they no longer work and keep needing more and more vaccines? That’s an entirely different multi-billion dollar business to research more about. There seems to be a trend in caring more for profits, than health. Just something to think about.
Many vets notice tumors and cancer in animals in the areas they are vaccinated at. It is common knowledge, and yet not too open for discussion any longer. Most people are not legally at freedom to speak the truth about side effects of vaccines. (death and cancer being a few of them).
Then, of course, exercise comes to play a big role. I’m blown away on how many people carry their dogs and have them in strollers and carriers, instead of them walking. That just seems very unnatural to me. Sometimes the fear of germs takes away from healthy living.
Also, toxins and chemicals all over the home and outside. So many pesticides, roundup and toxins outside on lawns and landscapes. Inside, isn’t much safer with homes who still use plenty of toxic household cleaning products and air fresheners.
How many pet owners, and even veterinarians, know what is in most commercial dog foods? Most would imagine food-like ingredients???
Do you know that our euthanized pets, roadkill, and left over body parts of dead and diseased animals, are all rendered and added as protein to our dog food? Are you in shock? I was disgusted!! These body parts are not able to be sold for human consumption, and many consist of cancerous tumors, and disease-ridden organs and more unimaginable things.
This alone might be a big clue as to the deterioration of your beloved pets’ health. Eating cancer, diseased body parts, roadkill, and old, sick euthanized beloved pets-may not be so healthy, yet is very profitable.
If you can’t believe me, explore it more yourself. The truth is there, no matter how much they hide it, disguise it, rename it or try to trick you. There aren’t such high standards on “organic” labeling for dog food, so that is a bit of a joke, as well. If you read the ingredient label, you usually see some sort of “meat meal” (not organic) at the very top of the ingredient list. Hmmmm????
Regulations aren’t strict enough on human food, so dogs are even lower on the list.
Knowing this, helps give unanswered questions more explainable, simple and plain answers.
If you don’t have time to prep and cook your own dog food, there are still other options. You may need to step out of the “dog food” aisle and just buy them human food to replace. That will ensure better quality of food.
I have a simple and quick recipe I make once a week for my dogs and have ready and available in the refrigerator for convenience. I use my crockpot and so the only time needed is putting everything in the crockpot and then storing it in a big jar when it cools. It can be much more affordable than some of the ‘top of the line’, expensive dog food brands.
I buy organic ground meat, or organic, free-range boneless chicken, frozen organic veggies (peas, cauliflower, spinach, carrots), add whole organic yams/sweet potatoes, some organic oats, and water. No prep needed. Throw it all in the crockpot, add water and turn on the cooker. I mash it when it’s all cooked, cooled, and put in the refrigerator. The dogs love it!!!
A few ingredients to stay away from for dogs, alongside xylitol, are avocados, onions, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, grapes, raisins, corn (common allergen), and anything you know your dog doesn’t tolerate.
Dogs can eat some of what were eat. Leftover meats, veggies, potatoes, and some grains. Some vets may discourage that, but I think human grade food is much healthier than ‘dog food’. The processed foods, even human grade, have so much more sugar, salt, and preservatives, it’s best to stick with real food.
It all depends on how far you want to go to insure good health and how much time you want to put into it. Start with what works for you and go from there. Cans of tuna, and some lunch meats can also be a quick way to go. (even though that’s more processed, it will be far better than the alternative.) Do what you can and go from there.
I know new information, especially as nasty as the pet food industry’s dirty little secrets can be tough to swallow.
First step is to gather more information for yourself, if you still can’t believe it. Next, would be to take steps to insure your beloved pet doesn’t fall prey to bad health, obesity, and cancer.
Next, take action. Our number one best way to fight back is to NOT give those companies our money. Why pay to slowly poison and kill your own pet?
That’s the biggest, most impactful thing you can do. We vote with our dollars. Period. Put your money where where your heart is. If we aren’t giving these companies money, they can not stay in business, and less pets will be poisoned.
Remember, *doctors/veterinarians, Big Pharmaceutical companies, and pet food suppliers do NOT stay in business by curing and healing people and our pets. The sick, diseased, and cancer victims keep them in business and making lots of money.
Use your dollars to vote!
*not all doctors/vets/companies are out to just make money, there are still many good people in the world that are here in service and love. We have the choice of who we choice to work with and trust.
I have two sources to share with you. Richard Pitcairn, DVM, PhD and Susan Bubble Pitcairn wrote a wonderful book I have referred to for several years, Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats. The other source is a website:
